Oriol López-Badell

Coordinator of the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) – University of Barcelona

  • Former activities:

Historian and international relations officer at the Memorial Democratic (Government of Catalonia); President of the Associació Conèixer Història (Knowing History Association)

  • My organization:
European Observatory on Memories (EUROM) – University of Barcelona

  • Examples of concrete activities I have organized/am organizing in the field of “dealing with the past”:

I launched the project www.memoriabcn.cat, a website and an app for smartphones conceived to disseminate information about sites of memory in the city of Barcelona.

As a member of the Associació Conèixer Història, I’m doing research and dissemination -through presentations and guided tours- about the recent local history in Catalonia and Spain.

Also, while working at the Memorial Democratic, I was in charge of keeping the relations with other governmental organizations and international platforms working in the promotion of memorial policies.

  • Concrete challenges I am facing in my “dealing with the past”-related work:

In the international scope, I’m contributing to the analysis of different public policies on memory carried out in Europe through my position at the European Observatory on Memories (EUROM). It is essential to be aware of what kind of memorial policies are being developed since this affects the quality of democracy and the social representation in the public sphere. From a local perspective, I’m addressing through public history practices different past events of the Spanish history that probably have not been disseminated enough among the society: the repression during Franco dictatorship in Spain, the heritage of slavery in the streets of Barcelona, etc.

  • My personal link to/interest for the topic of “dealing with difficult pasts”:
From a local perspective, I’m addressing through public history practices different past events of the Spanish history that probably have not been disseminated enough among the society: the repression during Franco dictatorship in Spain, the heritage of slavery in the streets of Barcelona, etc.
